Aliens: Colonial Marines

Obsidian have confirmed that the third of SEGA's Aliens Franchise games has been canned. In a post over on the developers official forums, the death knell of the RPG was announced:

Hi guys, The Guildmaster here. Rumors have circled around a bit regarding the fate of the Aliens role playing game that Obsidian and SEGA had been working on. Unfortunately, it is true that we are no longer working on the game, and we wanted to finally announce that officially to everyone who has been following its development. We’re going to keep this forum up for another week for archival purposes and to allow you guys to finish up any open threads, and then we will shut it down since it is no longer a product that is in development.

All of us here at Obsidian would like to thank you for your interest and support during its development, and we encourage you to check out the recent news about Alpha Protocol, which is coming to the PC, Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 very soon!

Sad news, but we still have Aliens vs Predator and more importantly Aliens Colonial Marines in the pipeline. Development of both is still going strong, with AvP featured at E3, and all the signs on Gearbox's website pointing to continued work on the co-op Aliens Shooter.

Regarding the demise of the Aliens RPG, SEGA issued the following statement:

At this point, SEGA has no plans to move forward with the Aliens RPG. The Aliens franchise offers us so much content to choose from that we feel it important to take a step back and carefully consider the type of game we want to release. We plan to continue working with the Aliens franchise and ask fans to be patient and stay tuned for more information about what SEGA has coming out for the Aliens series of games, starting with the upcoming Alien vs. Predator game. We are very excited about and focused on Alien vs. Predator, which promises gamers a fantastic single player game and an equally compelling multiplayer experience. We are confident that it provides all the excitement and fun that the Aliens and Predator fans are looking for!

Ahh gutted. I was probably looking forward to this more than I was ACM.

Well, crap does happen, we have proof now. Guess it's just the new AvP and A:CM for me now...

Yeah, and AvP was at E3 and ACM is still going strong.

This game being canned is of course bad news, but If I tell you the truth, if this goes in favour of a brand new avp RTS game for PC then..., not that bad news actually, I,ve always liked the RTS much more than the RPG

I say this because Sega said in a recent article that they will continue making games based off the alien (avp) franchise, so there is one little possibility at least.

Heh, I wouldn't mind an RTS at all, actually. Though, my only hope so far is that A: CM does not get canned. After I get A:CM, I won't care about other games.
